Radioactive Waste Overview
Radioactive waste is generated by both the medical and research uses of radioactive material within the University and affiliated UPMC hospitals. These materials are ultimately collected by the Radiation Safety Office and processed for disposal in accordance with the applicable federal and state regulations. Specific guidelines have been developed for the proper packaging and labeling of radioactive waste to facilitate safe and efficient processing and disposal. Any questions regarding the proper methods for packaging, segregation, storage, and
disposal should be directed to the Radiation Safety Office.
