Research Using Radionuclides

Initial Radiation Safety training is offered the third Wednesday of every month in the Radiation Safety Office, 3500 Fifth Avenue, Suite 400, from 9:00 - 10:30 AM. Registration is not required; participants are simply expected to attend the training session on the specified morning.

For refresher training please take the Radiation Safety course on the CITI system. Refresher training needs to be done every 3 years after your initial radiation safety training. The CITI training will not count as initial training.

Instructions to access and navigate CITI are available here (https://www.citi.pitt.edu/).  Once in CITI, go to “view courses” for the University of Pittsburgh, select “Add a course.”  Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the “Radiation Safety” course.  You can now start the course at any time.  When completed, please send your training certificate to radsafe@pitt.edu, and state the name of the Principle Investigator's lab you will be working in. The lecture covers:

  • Radiation Fundamentals
  • Properties of Ionizing Radiation
  • Biologial Effects of Radiation
  • Principles of Radiation Protection
  • Radiation Detection
  • Radioactive Materials Regulations
  • Radioactive Waste
  • Emergency Reponse

Attendance is required of all individuals, regardless of previous experience.
